"Guarding Her Galaxy" (2020)
Acrylic on Canvas
12" x 25" Original: $111.00

The was not her first conception. She had been creating for over 40 years. However, this day held a special melancholy of sobering thoughts. Her pensiveness was agitated by her daughter’s heart failure in the prime time of life. Over the past five years medical professionals warned that continuous removing of the fluid that was congesting her heart would eventually lead to kidney failure and eventually full heart failure.
Rejecting the despondency of depression and fighting the oncoming helplessness the mother, the artist, the creator, pulled out a canvas, determined to fight her way back to a more positive state of being. She imagined herself as the defender, the protector, the guardian. What else could she be for her only child, her only daughter Alisa.
To force faith to win over the fear she pulled out her phone, found the music app then scrolled through her library and playlists. She found it. Song number 43 on Playlist 1. She briefly wonders why it was there. That special song should be on her playlist titled “Jan’s Inspirational Songs” she immediately tapped the three dots to add the song to the playlist where it should be.
She had discovered the song on her first trip to California, in May 2020 in the middle of a pandemic. They had traveled to the University of California Medical Center to consult with the heart specialist team, about the potential for a heart transplant. That night, in the hotel, reflecting on the discouraging news heard during the medical visit, she played the song for her daughter. It had been recommended by her friend Renee/ Her goal was to lift their spirits and force the faith to believe they could get through this.
Later, back in Michigan, at home, in her studio, with paint, brush, and canvas – she played the song titled “Rescue” by Lauren Diagle. The words inspiring and strengthening, brought tears to her eyes as she painted. “I hear you whisper underneath your breath I hear your SOS, your SOS I will send out an army to find you in the middle of the darkest night It’s true, I will rescue you” (2018).
The words of a song and the need to fight for faith inspired this Guardian of the Galaxy.
